I put the car on jacks and spun the wheels. there seem to be a rattling/clicking sound coming from the front differential. When I'm accelarating with the car it seems to be fine. When I let off the gas I feel a vibration in the car and a grueling noise from the front. I thought it was a wheel bearing at first but when I got it home and on jacks turning the wheels makes no noise at all. When I turn either wheel by hand it clicks coming from the front diff. Is there away to check these gears without dropping the trans? Do they perhaps just need to be shimmed?

Answer

Let me check on this. I do remember there was one of these that the differential pin would come loose and slide out slowly and scrape throught the case.

It seems that the car makes this noise while it is not under load.

Is there a way to check this without dropping the trans?

Answer

You would need to drop the transmission to check it. i could not find the information that I thought it was so it may not pertain to this vehicle. There is a possibility though that you have a chipped tooth on the side gears or the ring and pinion itself. That would also make a difference on making the noise while accelerating and coasting. If the chip or broken tooth is on the side that has the force on it while accelerating it would make the noise while accelerating. If it made the noise while coasting like yours does then the chip would be on the opposite of the gear tooth. There is a cushion space in the ring and pinion gear that has to be there. When you accelerate the pinion gear pushes against the ring gear and makes it turn to get the vehicle to move. When you release the throttle the pinion gear will move back against the opposing side of the tooth so at this point the ring gear is actually pushing the pinion gear.

Any tips for me on dropping the trans? Any idea on the cost of the parts if the gear needs to be replaced?

There is no easy way to remove the transmission. You need to support the engine from the top and pull the trans from the bottom.
