Question

I have had the rear brakes replaced, new drums, new return springs, the self adjusters and springs. The vehicle is a 2003 Ford Ranger 4WD/ABS 4.0 engine and auto trans. Everything works great for 4 or 5 days but then the left rear ONLY starts to adjust itself so tight that the brake is dragging. I also use the parking brake each time I park. When it starts to happen, it is hard to back the truck up. HELP Joe

I assume this did not happen before you put brakes on correct?

I had just purchased the truck and the shoes on the back were worn out to the point of lining pulled off the shoes. No history of truck before I bought it

Do you still have the original adjusters ? Which shoe do you have the adjsuter cable on? Front or rear? Do you know the difference in the primary and secodary shoes?

No, thru away all parts replaced, also changed the wheel cylinders.Work is being performed by a very good mechanic, but he is also baffled

Accepted Answer

The normal way the brakes adjust are when going in reverse and the brakes are applied then this causes the shoes to move enough to pull the adjuster cable and ratchet the adjsuter, the only way it could be adjusting when going forward would be for the shoes to be installed wrong, short shoes go towards front, long shoes toward back, or the adjuster cable installed on the front shoe instead of the back. Thats it .. Its not a complicated system.
