Question

My one year old female Yorkshire terrier is spayed and about a month later she developed a behavior that at first I thought that her butt was itchy because she rubs and bounces at the same time, she does this daily 2 to 3 times a day. Someone told me that she might have unbalanced hormones. What do you think?

Answer

Thanks for the question XXXXXXXXXXXXX.

The most likely cause of a dog dragging it's behind on the floor and bouncing would be impacted anal glands this would not be related in any way to the spaying. The anal glands are normal structures in all dogs both male and female and impaction is a very minor condition which you vet will relieve in about ten seconds.

However other conditions which can cause irritation in this area are worm infestations and eczema of the outer anal area.

While you can learn to relieve blocked anal glands on your own it is not everyone's cup of tea so the best advice I can give you is to have your vet check your dog over, confirm the diagnosis, and sort things out. The chances are this is a very minor condition indeed.

Here is a link to a very informative web page which covers the subject : LINK

I did take her to the vet and he tested her stool for parasites, worms and the tests were negative. The vet also checked her anal area and it was okay.

Hello again,

Thanks for the further information, this does seem a strange case, not one I have encountered if your vet's checks did not reveal anything.

1. This is not likely to be hormonal in origin as spayed bitches have had their ovaries removed.

2. If this is not a physical problem such as some form of irritation then it could be behavioural. Treatment of behavioural problems like this could consist of strongly saying NO! when she does it and gently holding her to stop the movement. Other means could involve using a water pistol the moment she starts this behaviour.

3. However you would be wise to keep monitoring you r dog's anal area in case it becomes obvious what is going on.

Regards,

Scott
