Question

I have for the past year and a half had intermittent vertigo, dizziness, vomitting that last for 20min or couple hours. Additionally, I know have a swollen gland on my left shoulder between neck and shoulder. I checked and have a slight fever of 99.9 or 99.7. I am a 43 yr old AA female and have been told I may have meiner's disease. I've also experienced stiffness and aches on the left side. I'm now wondering if my syptoms fit any other disease that we have not checked. Please help!

Info Request

Hello; Thank you for writing in today. I want to provide you with the best possible information, so I do have a few questions. I hope you understand. Any other medical conditions? Were you evaluated by an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist when you were given the diagnosis of Meniere's Disease? With regard to this gland, could you tell me more about it? Where is it in relation to your clavicle---just above? How long have you had the swollen gland? Is is painful or nonpainful? Is it mobile or fixed? Any history of cancer? Any history of smoking? Have you had any CT or MRI of your chest since the gland was found? Please let me know. Lisa

I have PVC and it was intially thought that I was experiencing symptoms due to sinus symptomatic arrythmias. However, after taking toprol XL I am still having intermittent symptoms that lead to atleast 2 hours of feeling ill including skin tone looking gray and dizziness and vomitting. I've passed out this past Wednesday. The Meniere's disease has not been diagnosed but suspected. I saw ENT last year and they did not see anything and I passed hearing test. I am scheduled to see ENT again in Nov. The latest sypmtom include vision blurriness (not sure if I need better glasses though). The swollen gland was noticeable on Sunday and has gone down considerably; however, it is still visible upon examination and feel. I had a flu shot in the left arm last week (Friday) The swollen area is between my neck and shoulder slightly above clavical. It is bothersome to touch not painful. I am a non smoker and yes there has been breast cancer in my family both grandmother and great grandmother died of breast cancer. My mother had a dble mascetomy due to excessive tumors all benign.

Answer

Hello; Thank you for responding. At this point, I could offer some suggestions. First of all, you may have some type of infection, exacerbating your symptoms. Lymph nodes tend to swell when there is an infection. Since you have a swollen node and a low grade fever, it is quite possible that you may have an infection. Now, with this being said, you need to report this lymph node to your provider. I suspect this may be your left supraclavicular node. This node can swell with infection; however, it is also commonly palpable when there patients have lymphoma, thoracic or gastric cancers, and tuberculosis. I am not trying to alarm you. The fact that this node became enlarged quickly and is already resolving is a very good sign, and it actually leans toward infection, rather than any cancer; however, I still always recommend evaluation for these nodes. In addition, your provider can evaluate you and determine if you need any antibiotics, if this is indeed an infection. As for Meniere's disease, vertigo and vomiting definitely fit the symptoms of this disorder. I think the ENT specialist will be able to further validate your diagnosis. I hope this helps. If you have any additional questions, concerns, or need any clarification, please let me know. Lisa

I reported to my healthcare provider who did not look at the area but just advised the nurse to tell me to start ibuprofen 3x per day. How long should I wait to notify my Dr. if this doesn't resolve. I started taking ibuprofen on Monday pm.

Accepted Answer

If it does not resolve within a couple of weeks or if your current symptoms become worse, I would report it, and request that the physician take a look. Again, this is likely infection related; however, if it doesn't resolve or you ever notice this again in the future, please be sure to report it. I hope you start to feel better soon. Lisa
