Question
i recently had a LP for prolonged headache, some dizziness, visual changes(papellidema), and pressure in my upper neck/occipital area. I was diagnosed with aseptic meningitis. I also had a ct with contrast and an mri and mrv with contrast to rule out lesions or clots. These problems started in september with horrendous headaches which are now much better. My symptoms first started in late mid/late september. However, as i am more active i have somewhat of a headache and a general sense of head "congestion", ear pulsation and occipital pressure/slight pain. Could this also be occipital neuralgia or a nerve problem in my upper neck? thank you.

Answer
Hello; Thank you for writing in today. There is a possibility this is related to a separate neurological issue; however, it may also be related to your recent meningitis. Most cases of aseptic meningitis resolve without sequelae; however, some cases take a number of weeks to months to completely resolve. In your particular case, since you recently had meningitis, you should report your current symptoms. You need to have a full neurological examination. A neurological exam will be most helpful in differentiating this as possible long term sequelae versus a separate issue. Now, with this being said, you may find that your symptoms begin to diminish with time. Your activity may be triggering this a bit. Out of curiosity, were they able to isolate any possible cause for the aseptic meningitis, such as a positive viral infection? I hope this helps. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please let me know. Lisa

i had a full neuro exam with a neurologist, she actually did the lp the same day and said my csf pressure was ok, then they ruled out everything else down to lymes disease from blood and csf samples. as mentioned i had a ct with contrast for headaches and pain first, then a few weeks later had a mri/mrv to rule out lesions and blood flow problems or clots. do you know how long swelling in the eye can last? thank you, this was helpful.

Hello; Thank you for responding. I'm glad they ruled out Lyme disease, etc. When you didn't mention it in your posting, I was a bit concerned. I consulted some resources with regard to the papilledema. Once the spinal fluid pressure normalized, the optic disc swelling will slowly begin to resolve. This generally takes 6-8 weeks. However, obviously, if the pressure rises again for any reason, then risk of increases swelling returns. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please let me know. Lisa
