Info Request

Hi blg,

When was her last vet check? Was it for this problem? If so,what did the vet say?

What breed of dog is this?

Does she exhibit any other behaviors that you have noticed?

Has anything changed in the home? Any new animals or people?

How often do you let her out?

Last Vet ck was 6mos ago for a bacterial infection and at the time she was peeing in the house and her poop was runny. She took meds and was fine after. Now her poop is healthy. She's a mix shepherd/basenji. No other changes. We walk her 3 times a day.

Answer

Thank you very much for that information. I would suspect given her age that there is something health wise going on again and that does not always mean a physical problem. Dogs can get a type of dementia just as people do and sometimes the actions you see are subtle to start with and gradually you may see them start to become more and more noticeable. Canine cognitive dysfunction will have an older dog who had been house trained suddenly go in the home, a place where they may have always considered their den. Dogs do not like to eliminate where they eat and sleep and at 11 years old for this to start happening it sounds like a health issue rather than behavior.

You can try blocking her off in a kitchen and see if she goes in there ,if she does then definitely look into the health. The kitchen or other easy to clean room, is small enough that a house trained dog would not want to go in there if that is the only place she has access to, especially if it is behavior.

Watch for other signs of mental dysfunction, such as staring into space, not as excited to see you or other family members, sleeping more in the day and being awake more at night, or standing in corners or seeming lost.

Would you suggest reverting back to caging during the night or when we are not home?

Accepted Answer

Yes, however try it, but be prepared for a mess. I don't know how big of a crate you have.
