Question
I was just laid off from my job of 12 years. I was paid thru the end of the year, and have applied for unemployment. When it comes time to pay taxes in April 2010, I will owe a lot since I have been claiming the maximum number of deductions. My question is: Since I will no longer be earning an income, can I make payments to the State and the IRS? Thanks. Nancy

Answer
Hello,
Thanks for your question. Yes, you can make estimated tax payments to the IRS and your state. For the IRS, this can be done online through www.eftps.gov or by check/money order with the Form 1040-ES voucher. You have apply for this electronic payment service but it is free. It takes about 2 weeks to get a PIN number in the mail before you can begin making onlne payments. For more information on federal estimated tax payments see

Taxes
For California state estimated tax payments, see
Payment options
Hope this helps!

Thanks. Under "Estimated Taxes" is says, "Estimated tax is the method used to pay tax on income that is not subject to withholding," but my income IS subject to withholding, so would that still apply to me? My next question is, if so, do I wait until I get my taxes done in February to set up a payment schedule? Is that something my tax preparer does for me?
Accepted Answer
You can still make an estimated tax payment(s) even if you have withholding from your wages earned during the year. These payments will be added to your withholding which will reduce the tax you may owe when you figure your taxes around February. You could also or instead request that withholding tax be withheld from your unemployment checks. If you have already paid 100% of your 2008 tax by withholding, you would not incur the estimated tax penalty. Also, if you pay 90% of your 2009 tax by 1/15/2010, the estimated tax penalty would not apply. The estimated tax penalty may apply if you expect to owe $1000 or more after all your withholding and other credits are subtracted from your total tax.
If you believe you cannot pay all your 2009 taxes by 4/15/2010, then you can request an installment plan to make payments. Any taxes paid after 4/15/2010 would be subject to a late payment penalty and interest. Your tax preparer may be able to help you do this. If not, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or file a Form 433-D
