Question

I have a problem with fireplace letting smoke into house. We have two fireplaces back to back, one in den and one in dining room with two indipendent chimneys back to back but on top they look as its one big chimney. One fireplace is elevated about a foot from floor and other is floor level. On the roof the chimmney is covered with a flat top but has about a one foot window on two sides and these windows are higher than the highest part of roof line. It seems to help some if a window is opened about two inches so it can draft better. This has been going on since it was built five years ago. It does not do it all time but does not matter if wind blows are not. Any ideas? Thanks John

Hi XXXXXXXXX

New houses are very tight and fireplaces need to draw air from somewhere in order to establish a draft. That is the reason for the current code requirement for make up air to a fireplace. One other possible problem is the height of the chimney. The bottom of the opening at the top of the chimney must be at least 2' above anything within 10' measured level horizontally.
