Question

I'm worried about my stomach. In April I had a CT scan for sudden back pain that was normal. The back pain went away. Two days later I developed a dull pain to the left of my belly button. A week later I developed hives which are now under control after taking Allegra for a while. I have normal blood work that has been done twice, April and September and they also checked for C. Dificile toxin and H pylori bacteria. Both were normal. No problems with my stools except sometimes they have mucus in them. I have developed a lot of tingling, bubbling, rumbling in the stomach and it also feels tight. It has now been 6 months and it is not getting better. What is going on?

Answer

Hi and thank you for your question. I am sorry you have been experiencing stomach problems. Your symptoms could be associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Mucus in the stool , abdominal discomfort, bloating and rumbling are cardinal signs. You should ask your Dr if he thinks that this may be your problem. If so, there are many treatments available to help, the main one being diet. While you are waiting to see your Dr you can try a few things that may help you. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, limit your intake of fatty foods, limit dairy products, fruit, and artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol or xylitol, increasing fiber in your diet, and avoiding foods such as beans, cabbage, or uncooked cauliflower or broccoli. I hope this information helps you, if so, please click accept. Thank you and have a wonderful day!

That is what my doctor and also a digestive specialist have told me but I am worried they are missing something. The pain is in one specific area. Is that possible with IBS? When I read about IBS it talks about constipation, loose stool etc. and I don't have any of that. I'm worried about colon cancer and Ovarian cancer. I am trying to decide if I should go for more tests and also don't want to push it if it is really IBS. I've been taking Align, a probiotic supplement, staying away from fatty foods but it doesn't really make a difference. Now I am worried about the stomach all the time and I think that makes it even worse. How do I put my mind at ease with the diagnosis and do you think it could be something else? The pain is a dull, constant pain, and it feels like that one area is "full". Are those normal symptoms of IBS.

Accepted Answer

In view of two Physicians diagnosing IBS and the tests you have had done, it is most likely IBS. You do not have to have diarrhea or constipation. The full feeling is another sign of IBS. For your peace of mind perhaps you could ask your Dr. to order a colonoscopy which would take a close look at your colon. You could also see your gynecologist for a pap and exam to rule out any possible gynelogoligical problems.
