Question

Here's a odd one.. I have a 97 gst eclipse spyder. It has the 4g63 engine turbo. Standard tranny. It has occassionally hesitated when I tried to start it and I would just turn the key a few more times and it would start right up. Now it will not start at all. It will if you jump it. I can hear the starter click repeatedly but no turn over. The odd part is that my stereo will not send sound through to the speakers when the key is on now. The stereo will start and I can see it reading the songs but no sound. The battery is new and I was thinking maybe the starter or solinoid, but what would the stereo mean? Could this be a larger electrical issue?

Answer

Greetings XXXXXXXX, I would check the battery terminals for corrosion INSIDE between the terminal and the battery post for the starter problem...A corroded or loose connection between the battery and the starter can cause a high resistance condition and lead to the clicking several times before actually starting...as far as the stereo, it sounds like you may have either a head or amp failure...check for power and ground at both units and if all is OK, you'll have to swap out units to narrow down the failure...jeffrey590

No the problem is not in the stereo... it will come on fine when the car is running. It is when the car is only on the on position, but not running, that it comes on but does not power the speakers. I can jump the car, I tested the battery and the alternater and both are fine. My main problem is that I can leave the car for only a few hours without it going to where it wont start. If I jump it and turn it off it will start up as much as I want. The only relevence the stereo has is that I think maybe it's grounding out somewhere and draining the battery.

OK...With this information I would next check the ignition switch to make sure it is supplying both keyed +12volts and constant +12volts to the stereo...I would also get hold of an amp meter and hook it in series between the negative battery post and negative battery cable...wait approx 20 minutes and then check the amp draw...it should be less than 30 milli amps...otherwise you have a parasitic draw in the vehicle...jeffrey590
