Question

I just bougth a boat with the mercruiser 470,year 1985 .He started the engine to show me that the engine was fine , is it posible that the water pump impeller got damaged ?

Did the seller start the engine for you with no water going to it?

no , he did not use water at all.

Yes the seller burnt up the water pump impeller in the outdrive. The impeller is made of rubber and it only takes a 30 second dry run to destroy it. you will need to have the outdrive serviced. The service should included removing the outdrive,draining the gear lube from it,unbolting the upper housing from the lower housing to gain access to the water pump impeller assy. Also the engine alignment should be checked at this time and all the grease fittings should be greased too.It would be a good idea to inspect all the rubber bellows once the outdrive has been removed.A good reputable shop should perform all of this as a outdrive service package.
