My hamster looks sick. His behind used to look pink and puffy, now he looks doubled over and he doesn't seem to have the energy in his step. What should we do to help him?

Answer

Hi there

He may be suffering from abdominal pain (tummy pain) or something similar that is causing him to feel painful and be doubled over and be lacking in energy.

Is he eating or drinking at all? If he isn't it's vital to get some sort of energy into him, so you could try syringing a small amount of pineapple juice or Gatorade for energy.

There is nothing that you can give him for pain at home however, so i would recommend you get him checked over at your vets as soon as you can, as he may be suffering with a painful abdomen that needs treatment.

I did see him with food in his hand but unsure if he ate. He is breathing funny and he is huddled in the corner and not in his hut as usual. He breathing is faster and very visible. HIs eyes are more shut and his ears are not up as usual.

Accepted Answer

From that extra information i suspect he has a respiratory infection- these are common in hamsters, and can make them quite poorly, quickly. He will need some antibiotics, probably one called 'Baytril' from your vet.
