Question

Have a 2006 Mazda 5 with 70000 miles on it. The front end has loud rattles when driving and the front seems to be bouncing up and down a lot more than it use to. Could a car this new need shocks allready? And if it does is it expensive to have shocks replaced? Thank you. JC

Answer

Hello, my name is Mike and I can help you with this problem.

You may have 2 separate issues here causing these problems, or all of it could be coming from your shocks/struts.

These vehicles use a type of swaybar link that can rattle quite loudly when worn. This could be the rattle noise you are hearing, this is a common item.

However, since you say the vehicle is bouncy, the fluid may have leaked out, or the struts could be otherwise internally damaged, which could cause a bouncy ride AND rattling. If it's boncy, then you definately need struts (shock and struts are basically the same in their ride quality functions).

If the struts are worn, be sure that the strut mounts are looked at good while it's apart. Strut mounts are another fairly common source of rattles.

There are other possibilities that could cause rattles, such as ball joints and control arm bushings, but these are less likely and they would also be easy for a mechanic to locate.

Hope that this answers your question.

thanks,

Mike

What would be an approximate cost to replace the struts?

Accepted Answer

I can only give you a close estimate. there are several parts options, so I will try to guess in the middle.

For the strut replacement, around $600. You will also need to have an alignment with that which will add $40-$80.

Hope that helps get you close.

Thanks,

Mike
