Question

My son has had headlight problems for years on his otherwise satisfactory Suzuki Swift, especially with the high beams. I think it's a 1994 (or close to that) model. If the lights are repaired they alway soon revert to no high beams or even to where all he gets is those faint daylight driving lights. Now a mechanic wants to replace the headlight switch and got a quote for $500 just for the part! Here is my question: Couldn't one just rig up a simple, inexpensive separate switch and bypass the steering column altogether? (Having an airbag is gointg to make this repair very labor intensive and more expensive than this younster can afford. Thanks! Fred Ware, Valdosta, GA XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX

Optional Information

Year: 1995
Make: Suzuki
Model: Swift

Already Tried:
Fuse box was rewired some time ago then replaced. I recall that one mechanic removed the steering column and said he "found the problem," whereupon after a short time lapse the lights once again dimmed. I am wondering whether or not the low beams are actually on and just weak! My son has been driving very slowly on highway trips ever since he bought the car and a lot of mechanics just can't figure out what's wrong! His high beams were fine during those few moments they came on!

Hi
Welcome to JA.com
The fault you have sound like a switch problem.
The wiring to the headlamps works on a switched earth and can be a bit tempremental on the switch circiut, you have two choices either search the web for a breaker yard for a combination switch(head light and wiper) or as you say have a separate switch fitted into the dash by a auto electrion, I'm not sure on your laws about localtion of the switch or operation of the main beam so get some advice before commiting to the switch option.
