Question

I have been diagnosed with von meyenburg complex. Hamartomas in my liver & kidneys. Is this no big deal or what are the complications that may result from these type lesions? I have read the mastasis and can cause problems with organs including ear drums, and sometimes brain. I have had also vertigo and ear issues for 6 months, could these be related? Is this something I should keep and eye on, and what are preventatives to help it to stop spreading? Thanks so much

I have been to the library for books on this disorder, online, and in speaking with my doctor he feels it's nothing to concern myself with--although I have a continual pain in my upper right side. He say's this is very common, yet I am reading it is very uncommon. No books on it?

Answer

HI and thank you for your question. I can understand your concern. It's frightening to get a new diagnosis, no matter what it is. Von Meyenburg complex is a benign liver malformation that includes biliary cystic lesions with congenital hepatic fibrosis causing ductal plate malformations. It is generally without symptoms, but some right upper quadrant discomfort has been reported. Your ear and vertigo problems are completely unrelated. Because it is a benign condition there does not seem to be any books readily available other than Physician reference, which is available on line. Here are a few links: http://www.springerlink.com/content/867q504134813605/ http://74.125.113.132/search?q=cache:tyzKSvyhVxMJ:www.wjgnet.com/ 1007-9327/12/4250.pdf+von+meyenburg+complex&cd=13&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us http://rad.usuhs.edu/medpix/parent.php3?mode=factoid_images&recnum=6481 I hope this information helps you , if so, please click accept. Thank you and have a wonderful day! :-)

Thank you for your answer, but I already saw that info. online. I needed more in depth info...What is the potential of this spreading to other organs? What can stop the spreading? Does this usually lead to more serious complications? What should I watch for in the future to prevent more serious complications? I want more specifics than what I have already found investigating this myself online..Thanks

Answer

This does not lead to any further problems unless you have another underlying disease such as polycystic kidney disease, or if you aquire another disease process.

So unless I have another underlying disease complication these are not likely to spread? They have gone from 8 to too many to count in six months. I also do have these on my kidneys, @ 8 lesions on each lobe- but my liver seems to be spreading quickly.. I have read that these cycst can spread to become obstructions. What do I do about the consistant tooth ache pain in my right side?

Answer

Von Meyenburg complexes are benign liver lesions consisting of dilated bile duct structures with a surrounding fibrous stroma.(Stroma is the connective tissue) Usually, these lesions do not have any pathological value, however, a malignant transformation and association with cholangiocarcinomas( Cancer of the bile ducts) may be possible. Bile duct hamartomas may be found in normal liver tissue, but also in association with Caroli’s syndrome (a rare inherited disorder that dilates the bile ducts) , congenital hepatic fibrosis, or inherited polycystic kindney disease. It would be a good idea to follow up with your Dr regularly for your own peace of mind.

Do you know if there is any treatment or diet to control the growth and spread of harmatoma's? Thanks

Answer

There is no treatment or dietary recommendation for this disorder, but you certainly could maintain a diet that supports the liver. Here is a link that may benefit you: http://www.life123.com/health/nutrition/cancer-prevention/liver-cancer-treatment.shtml#STS=g1au6f1n.1f4w

In registering with a hospital nurse for a colonoscopy scheduled for tomorrow, she told me Von Meyenburg is a rare disorder, her only knowing 2 people diagnosed in her 30 years as a nurse! Is this rare? She asked if it was causing any bleeding issues? Does it cause bleeding issues? Also she told me my children could have it and would also have to be tested? Is this genetic? Could she had been confusing this with something else?

Accepted Answer

In the absence of polysystic disease they are considered an abnormality of a normal healthy liver. It is often found on autopsy of people who died of old age. Genetic testing is not recommended as this is a benign condition.
