Dear XXXXXXXX,

Is there any blood coming out of his rectum?

Is he able to pass feces?

Has he been eating and drinking today?

What color are his gums?

Answer

Thank you.

Try giving him 3 slices of real whole wheat bread and 2 tablespoons of metaucil. The bread should bulk things up and the metamucil should form a coating around it.

I would feed him a bland diet of chicken, or plain ground beef (no fat), and rice until he is better.

Monitor his gum color. If his gums become pale, he may have internal bleeding from one of the bones cutting his intestines.

Of course blood coming out of the rectum, or in the feces, is a sign of internal bleeding as well.

Not passing feces, vomiting, or not eating are all signs of a gastrointestinal foreign body.

If you notice any of these, he needs to get to the vet right away. You may have to borrow money.

Some dogs get away with eating bones but I would not give him any more. He will not be lucky forever and he may need surgery one day. It would be better to try and prevent it.

WILL THE BONE PASS BY IT SELF AND CAN I GIVE THE BREAD AND MAYBE SOME OIL, AS I DON'T HAVE ANY METUMECIL ON HAND. I FOR SURE WON'T GIVE ANY MORE BONES!! JUST ONE OF THOSE THAT HAS ALWAYS GIVEN DOGS CERTAIN BONES JUST LIMITED THEM. ALSO, WHAT TO DO TO HELP WITH THE PAIN HE SEEMS TO BE IN. i DO HAVE TRAMADOL ON HAND THAT I KEEP IN CASE OF ANOTHER PIGMY BITE. WILL THAT HELP HIM.

Answer

No do not give any oil. Then he will have oily diarrhea and the straining from that will make him very uncomfortable. Just get the metamucil in the morning then.

If the tramadol was prescribed for him, it would be fine to give it to him.

If not, let me know how much he weighs and the mg of the tramadol and I will calculate his dose.

I am not sure if the bone/bones will pass on its own or not.

Often if they have made it to the rectal area, it is painful but they do pass.

My dogs have stolen bones off the kitchen counter too. It is just a matter of luck if they need surgery or not.

tramadol is for him by his vet, for a previous matter, he is 110 lbs big boy, so probably two wouldn't you think, and i'll try the other in morning after getting to store for metamucil.I hear him barking at something and in a different area then where he was a while ago, going to check on him be right back. He is an outside dog. I did bring him in, but he wanted to go out so I went with him and then he didnt want to come back in. I think it is a porkchop bone he gulped down without chewing it up, is that shape of bone possible to come out without surgery?

Accepted Answer

I have seen dogs eat and pass some unbelievable stuff. You never know. You will just have to wait and see. Hope for the best. Dogs have eaten back seats of cars, dvd players, lots of clothing...It is just a matter of luck.

Many a dog has eaten a pork chop bone and has been fine.

I can not say if he will pass it or not. I would need to take an abdominal x ray.

Others have eaten one small piece and have needed surgery. It depends on the dog.

Yes you can give him two tramadols.
