Dear XXXXXXXX,
Is there any blood coming out of his rectum?
Is he able to pass feces?
Has he been eating and drinking today?
What color are his gums?
Thank you.
Try giving him 3 slices of real whole wheat bread and 2 tablespoons of metaucil. The bread should bulk things up and the metamucil should form a coating around it.
I would feed him a bland diet of chicken, or plain ground beef (no fat), and rice until he is better.
Monitor his gum color. If his gums become pale, he may have internal bleeding from one of the bones cutting his intestines.
Of course blood coming out of the rectum, or in the feces, is a sign of internal bleeding as well.
Not passing feces, vomiting, or not eating are all signs of a gastrointestinal foreign body.
If you notice any of these, he needs to get to the vet right away. You may have to borrow money.
Some dogs get away with eating bones but I would not give him any more. He will not be lucky forever and he may need surgery one day. It would be better to try and prevent it.
No do not give any oil. Then he will have oily diarrhea and the straining from that will make him very uncomfortable. Just get the metamucil in the morning then.
If the tramadol was prescribed for him, it would be fine to give it to him.
If not, let me know how much he weighs and the mg of the tramadol and I will calculate his dose.
I am not sure if the bone/bones will pass on its own or not.
Often if they have made it to the rectal area, it is painful but they do pass.
My dogs have stolen bones off the kitchen counter too. It is just a matter of luck if they need surgery or not.
I have seen dogs eat and pass some unbelievable stuff. You never know. You will just have to wait and see. Hope for the best. Dogs have eaten back seats of cars, dvd players, lots of clothing...It is just a matter of luck.
Many a dog has eaten a pork chop bone and has been fine.
I can not say if he will pass it or not. I would need to take an abdominal x ray.
Others have eaten one small piece and have needed surgery. It depends on the dog.
Yes you can give him two tramadols.
