Question

I have a 8 year old Pug that has a Hepatic shunt(diagnosed 7 years ago), He is on Metronidazole and Enulose (lactose solution). He is extremely agitated at night, he drinks a lot of water and and is in and out of the house all night. He cannot get comfortable and keeps us up all night. Last week the vet gave us some Evavil to give him at night and he still is very agitated, stalks around and urinates in the house. I am looking for some releif for the little guy, does anyone have any suggestions

Info Request

Did your Pug have a urinalysis or bloodwork done last week at the vet? Xrays?

Is he quiet during the day and sleeping soundly then?

Thanks.

No urinalysis x-rays or bloodwork weredone last week at the vet.

We were originally told that he would only live 1 or 2 years and has lived to be 8.

He does seem to sleep and be ok during the day its difficult to tell since he is by himself but I arrive home around 1 pm and he is usually sleeping.

He will typically drink between 1 and 2 gallons of water betreen 6pm and 11pm when we retire for the night. He drinks so much that he looks freakishly bloated

WOW that is a LOT of water for a Pug! Especially that late at night!

I would *strongly* suggest that you do some bloodwork and a urinalysis to check his kidney function and bladder - make sure there is no underlying diabetes, kidney problems, bladder stones, Cushings disease, etc. If bladder or kidney stones look like a possibility, then xrays or ultrasound of the abdomen to look for stones.

If there is nothing that shows up on the bloodwork, urinalysis or other tests, then as long as he is drinking a SUFFICIENT amount of water during the day, I would pull all the water up by 7 pm or so to limit the amount of water - I would be up all night peeing too if I was drinking 1 to 2 gallons of water every evening! However, I would not just try this without having the diagnostic workup done first because you could suddenly make him very ill if he does have an underlying condition and you limit his water.

Good luck with your Pug-let! They are such great little dogs...
