Question
I have a 5.6 pound 7 month Yorkie Very heathy. She and sister (same age) were in back yard ate some pine cone and bark off tree....One is having diarhea (started Saturday evening). Still had Sunday so bought Imodium AD. Was little better this am. (with tiny bit of solid in it) but now it is loose again and goldish and not brown as normal. I did give her some rice and chicken last night and this morning (still a little regular Eukabana in there) but then earlier just rice...and that is when it has lightened up. We have to travel alot in our business and when we arrived at business apartment in Kerrville TX awhile ago is when she had golden loose. I cannot get a vet till morning. Also can I give her Imodium AD (childrens) again and how much is right amount? Thank you. Jan Marcum

Answer
Hi,
You can give Immodium for several days in a row. Can you tell me how many mgs per ml is in the children's solution?
It is also possible that your dog has a "bacterial overgrowth" in the intestines from the bark/sap and/or the stress of travelling. I would continue with the rice and chicken, but you may need some antibiotics (metronidazole) from your vet to clear up the diarrhea if the Immodium and bland diet don't do the trick. You might also try adding a probiotic to her food once a day (I use Fortiflora), which will help repopulate her intestines with "healthy" bacteria.
The other concern in a young dog with diarrhea is intestinal parasites. She may still have something like roundworms or coccidia that didn't cause any problems until she got stressed. It would be good to take a fresh sample of the soft stool to your vet for analysis. I would take your dog, too, as little Yorkies can get dehydrated pretty quickly when they have diarrhea.

Thank you very much. I don't know where to get the probiotic. At a grocery store or where? I appreciate your helping me. Should I put anything in water? Like karo (I know that normally is for hypoglocemia). She is still hopping around and barking and playing with her sister. Would pediolyte be good? In children's solution us says 7.5 miligram for over 2 years.

Your little girl only needs 0.25 mg of the Immodium, which is a pretty small amount, depending on how many milliters contains that 7.5 mg. It might be better (safer) to give her some Pepto-bismal instead--she could have 1/2 ml (0.6, to be exact) of the regular strength stuff.
I have seen some probiotics in pet stores, but an grocery store with a health food section (someplace like Whole Foods) will have human ones. They are better than nothing.
I wouldn't add anything to her water necessarily. If she is eating some, not vomiting, and acting otherwise normally she probably isn't dehydrated and doesn't have a low blood sugar level. If you have some Pedialyte, you could put a little down for her to drink. But I wouldn't make a special trip out to get any.
