Answer

Hello,

When there is no external cause for a depression like a loss of a loved one or monetary issues, it is called an endogenous depression. Such a depression is thought to be caused by an imbalance in the brain chemistry specifically the neurotransmitters. See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endogenous_depression

The ttreatment for such a depression is a choice of Psychotherapy, specifically Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT in which one learns to think and act differently and thus feel differently with improved mood. More commonly this type of depression is treated psychiatrically with antidepressant medications of which there are four general types: The older tricyclics like Elavil; the newer SSRI's like Prozac or Paxcil; the newest are the SNRI like Effexor or Cymbalta; and the atypical antidepressants like Welbutrin (medicine with least side effects). You have good reason to believe with treatment either psychotherapy, medication or both. You are not alone approximately 10% of the population suffers from some form of depression. Best wishes and good luck

Sincerely,

Ralph LMHC
