Question

I have a 2003 BMW 525i with 63k miles. I recently purchased the car and it is giving problems less than 30days after the purchase. It began idling rough, service ligt came on. My technician thought it was a vaccum pipe. The vaccum pipe was spilt and we replaced it. It was still missing. The tech hooked up the computer and it said misfire on 1, 2 and 6. I replaced those three coil packs and there is still no signal on the number 2 cylinder. The number 2 coil pack was fried. Black, cracked and appeared to be swollen, for lack of a better word. The compression for all cylinders is around 190 but the computer is saying there is still no signal on the number 2 cylinder. The next thing they are wanting to look at is the fuel injection system. Please provide me with some feedback on this issue. Are the 03's known for this. What could the problem be?

Answer

Hello! Welcome to justanswer!

Ok, theres two things that may need repalcing. One is the wiring harness for the coils. Second is the DME because the shorted coil may have ruined it. The harness is known to be bad on an 03 so try that first the harness part number is BMW part# 12 51 7 518 000

how do I look into the wiring harness for the coils? I work at a Mercedes dealership and my techs here are the ones who have been doing the work on it for me. Is the DME the control module for the fuel injection system?

Answer

Ok, the DME is the engine computer. The best place is www.bba-reman.com to get one without being hosed. The harness for the coils is known to be bad but not shorted, I would for good measure get a new one from BMW.

What I meant in my question regarding the harness for the coils is that I want to ask my tech to assess the wiring harness for the coils. How do I direct him to do that? Would it be easy enough for them to check? Is it something they would have seen/evaluated when the coil packs were replaced?

Answer

Ok, the harness is known to have bad contacts in the connectors. A visual inspection will not reveal this. If you just want to get the system back up again, just have your technicians make sure there are no shorts between all coils and the DME. If none are found, get a new DME from BBA.

Do you know if the contacts for the connectors is a campaign or warranty issue? I had a 99 Mercedes-Benz C280 and the crank shaft pulley was still covered under warranty

Answer

Ok, you arent in the vin range for the bad harness and based on your techs observations that you conveyed to me it looks like the burned coil shorted out the DME so in your case you need a new DME and the coil you allready replaced. Get a new DME and install it and your BMW will run right again.

THANKS! You have been a great help. I am on the BBA website trying to find the DME. I don't see anything that fits that acronymn or "control module" anything like that.

I am just asking you since you are familiar with the site. Any guidance would be appreciated. I'm not ordering the part right now, I just want to make sure I will be going in the right direction when the time comes.

I f you could please advise, I would appreciate it. I will accept your answer either way. Thanks again! Rachel

No problem, Rachel and it has been a pleasure chatting with you. The best thing to do with BBA in your case would be to call them. Im sure they can help. Make sure you go on their US part of the site. In the upper left corner of the main site is an American flag, click it and you will be on the US site. Call them when you have your DME in your hand so you can give them the numbers off it to insure you are ordering the right part.
