Question

I have a linksys wireless router model# BEFW1154 that I have connected thru Comcast cable internet, and I can't find the signal on either of my lap tops. I have reset the unit. I have disconnected and reconnected everything with the unit, and I't still won't communicate. I have two lights blinking on the front on the router. The first is the Power and the second is the Internet. I am sending this email using my lap top picking up signal from an unlocked Net Gear router in the neighborhood, so I don't believe there is anything wrong with my lap top. Is there a way to verify that the router I have is still good? It worked when I disconnected approximately 2 yrs ago. Please help!

Answer

Hi there,

I would first try the reset button on the back of the unit (push for 5 seconds) then re-install the router with the disc.

If that does not work, download and upgrade the firmware on the router.
You can go to the download page here. Insert the version number of the router, then scroll down on the page it will have a firmware download, click on that and it will bring you to a new page to download it and give you instructions.

This clears up most issues. Let me know, thanks!

I have tried to reset the unit, and that doesn't work. I do not know where the disk is to re-install it, but I have used it with both lap tops before. I went to the link to download firmware, and it loads something into the bottom of my screen, however when I try to open it, it says it is a BIM file, and I couldn't find a program to open it.

Answer

Yes you have to follow the instructions on the download page to log into the router, then upload the firmware through the router. The comptuer doesn't know what the BIM file is or what to do with it.

Accepted Answer

Here are the firmware update instructions:

  1. Plug router into the computer with the ethernet cable.
  2. Open a Web browser.
  3. Access the router (http://192.168.1.1 or the Default Gateway address if the router's default IP was changed).
  4. Log in the router (User Name = BLANK(No username) and Password = password, unless you changed it).
  5. Under Maintenance, click Router Upgrade.
  6. Click Browse and locate the firmware upgrade file.
  7. Click Upload.
  8. Wait for the router to reboot.
  9. Under Maintenance, click Settings Backup, then click Erase. (Or press the reset button on the back for 10 seconds.)
  10. Wait one minute for the router to reboot.
