Question

Our Rottweiler has vomited twice this morning primarily bile. The last vomit has traces of blood maybe there was red in it. He obviously doesn't feel well. He's hungry by won't eat (even chicken). I think he may have swallowed the end of a T-bone he had been "playing" with the past few days because I can't find it. I'm not sure though. Any suggestions?

Answer

Hi,

At this point I would be concerned about a blockage from the bone he might have ate. The symptoms point toward this condition. The animal usually becomes dehydrated and full of painful gas and fluid that accumulates in the digestive tract, unable to move through and out of the pet's body. In the worst-case scenario, the foreign body can completely obstruct the animal's digestive tract and even puncture the intestinal wall.

He will need to see the vet asap. This is a emergency situation and can result in death if not treated quickly. When a pet has a blockage, they may exhibit any of the following symptoms: vomiting, loss of appetite, distended belly, an absence of feces or a change in the feces, blood in the stool or vomit, drooling, and retching or trying to vomit with the meal coming up or nothing coming up. He is exhibiting several symptoms which point towards a blockage. If this is left untreated it will get worse and you will see more symptoms and eventually death. Please do not put this off, the sooner he is seen the better.
