Question

I have a tax sheltered IRA. I had heard that I would be able to put some of this money in a charity, such as church, and not have to pay taxes on it. I am 70 , and will be 71 in Dec. 2009. Is this true? Where would I go on line to get this tax information.

Hello bettie,

The Charitable IRA Rollover permits taxpayers to make donations directly to qualified charitable organizations from their IRA accounts without counting these amounts as part of their adjusted gross income, and therefore without paying tax on the amounts donated.

In order to qualify, you must be age 70-1/2 or older at the time the distribution is made. The contribution must be made directly from the IRA account to the qualified charity, so the custodian of your IRA is the one who makes the contribution as you direct them to. Your contributions may not exceed the amount of $100,000.

I am giving you a link to an article which is very helpful in explaining how this special IRA charitable rollover works.
