Question

My 12 year old Golden Retriever recently had surgery to remove a large mass from her stomach. She has been taking 100mg tablets of Deramaxx once a day for the last week or so for the swelling. There was some miscommunication in my family, and we accidentally gave her two 100mg tabs 15 minutes apart (the bottle says only one every 24 hrs). It doesn't sound like an awful lot, but I'm not sure with this drug. Should I be worried? She weighs about 80-90lbs.

Hi, thanks for your question. The high end of the post-operative dose range for Deramaxx is 4 mg per kilogram of weight, giving us a dose of approximately 160-170 mg as a high end of the normal range. THis dose of 200mg is somewhat above that range, but should not be high enough to cause serious harm to the kidneys, and hopefully will not cause much harm to the digestive tract. I would suggest not giving another dose for 48 hours, and administering Pepcid (10mg) may help reduce acidity in the stomach. If any vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or other issues appear, you must seek veterinary care as soon as possible.
