I have a maytag water heater.I have to convert to propane.it has a screw to push in and turn on regulator.do I have to change orifice also?

I turned the screw and changed the orifice but I get alot of soot.I kinda know what I'm doing I used to repair gas driers and stoves.

Answer
You need an LP gas valve. You can't properly adjust a NG gas valve to work with LP.
