Question

On oct 23 (yesterday) I received a H1N1 shot plus pneumonia shot.6 or 7 hours later my arm where I received the pneumonia shot turned to excruciating (level 9 or 10) pain, and continues currently. I cannot lift my arm (husband is on keyboard). Mild swelling and fever. I am experiencing no breathing or airway problems. My #1 concern is the super-severe pain. Is this normal? When can I expect relief? What should I do?

Do you have pain that radiates down the arm?

Have you had this type of reaction to the flu vaccination before?

Are you having trouble lifting the arm because of the pain, or are you truly having weakness?

OK.

Do you have neck pain?

Where does this pain radiate down your arm?

yes, pain radiating to neck; pain radiates from pneumonia shot site to neck and down arm to about elbow and stops.

Accepted Answer

OK.

There probably are two possibilities here.

The most likely possibility is that you are just having an inflammatory response to the injected vaccine into the arm.

Up to 10% of people develop this type of reaction, which is pain and swelling around the injection site. It is not an "allergy", just your body's reaction to it. People can also develop a fever after getting the injection as well.

The fact that the pain started to occur 6 hours after the injection fits right into the time course of this type of reaction (6-8 hours after injection).

The fact that you aren't having and swelling in the neck or breathing problems is good. Putting a cold washcloth over the area, and taking advil can help with this reaction. It should improve within a couple of days.

The other possibility, of pain radiating in this area down the arm and to the neck is a pinched nerve in the neck. Unlikely, given the time course of the injection and pain, but should your pains not improve within a few days, this may be a possibility.
