Question

I have a 2 year old pitt bull (Pandora). I have had her to the Vet numerous times and they keep putting her on antibiotics that don't work. She is tearing up her feet and now one of her pads are torn open. The Vet seems to think she is being bitten but my other dog has no symptoms of this. She is an in house dog that has access to the back yard via the dog door. I am at my wits end and really need some positive guidance. Please help! Sincerely, X.X. XXXXXXXX

Info Request

Hello and thank you for the question?

Can you tell me if this is new?

Does she seem itchy in the face or ears?

Has there been any food changes?

Yes, she is itching the top of her head. No ear problems. No food change in 2 months when I changed from Nutro Large Breed Puppy (contained wheat and chicken) to Blue All Natural.

Ok, Thank you for the information.

Feet chewing and face and head itching is very often associated with a food allergy.

It may be that she is reacting to the meat base or new grain in the new food. If she did not have this problem while on the old food I would make sure that the food you are feeding now also has a chicken base and not beef or lamb. Duck or rabbit base is the least reactive.

The biggest problem are often corn and corn meal.

You can also speak with your vet about trying science diet Z/D this is an allergen diet in which the molecules are broken down so that the body does not identify the proteins or grains. I have seen tremendous improvement with this food.

I would also recommend not feeding puppy food if you are still doing so. The calories content is to high for an adult dog.

Pit Bulls are very prone to allergies and skin problems. It may also be that she has developed allergies to grass. It may help to wipe her feet after she has been outside to remove any allergens. Some dogs do very well with dog booties and this prevents all contact with anything she may be reacting to.Here is a link to some Pit Bull skin problems

Benadryl is often very helpful to dogs with allergies and will help control the itching.

Here is a link to approved over the counter medication used in pets, it also supplies the recommended dosages.

If changing the food does not help you may want to speak to your vet about the possibility of a fungal or yeast infection in the feet.

I hope this has pointed you in the right direction. please reply back if I can be of further assistance
