Question

I have a healthy 11 year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever and we recentlH moved to South Carolina. We started having back sneezes and a local vet put him on Temaril-P. After 3 weeks, he is outwardly sneezing and appears to have some blood residue that slings out of either his nose or mouth. His breathing seems a bit labored. He is eating well and appears happy and normal, but the breathing is weird.

Hi there,

The symptoms you are describing (the reverse sneezing, regular sneezing and bloody nasal discharge when he sneezes) can be seen with fungal infections in the nasal cavity (blastomycosis, aspergillosis and others), mites, foreign debris (grass awns, etc), cancer and others. The sneezing/reverse sneezing and the blood are signs of irritation/inflammation of the lining of the nasal cavity and areas beyond. There has to be something there to cause this inflammation, so these symptoms should not be taken lightly.

I would recommend running baseline blood tests (such as liver and kidney screening, etc), a complete blood count, fungal titers (tests that show you if your dog has a high level of antibodies against certain fungal infections, which could indicate infection), x-rays of the skull/nasal cavity and eventually rhinoscopy (internal examination of the nasal cavity with a small camera to examine and collect samples if necessary).

I would not wait too long - it's better to begin finding the cause now, while he's feeling well. I wish you best of luck; please let me know if you have any other questions.
