Question

Hi, I have this pain when I breathe in. It is very difficult to sleep when I lie on my side. The pain feels like it is coming up from the lung area in the front. When I bend down it seems to exacerbate. It feels fine during the day...But the breating in and holding it is when I feel it most. I was fitted with a heart monitor in April and felt great. I generally feel good: no seating, no pain down my arm, no fever. Not sleeping well is getting me depressed. Would love your diagnosis.

No fever...no breathing difficulty. But when I am sleeping on my side, it seems to exacerbate. It started about 2 days ago. I feel fine during the day. My pacemaker really makes me feel better. But why this type of aggravation. As I type this there is no pain. I know if I could sleep better, I would feel better too.

Accepted Answer

Hello,

This is likely to be from a Gastro-Esophegeal-Reflux Disease / Hiatus Hernia, that is pain caused by a reflux of stomach acid into the food pipe and thus the pain.

This pain would be in the center of the chest and would be exacerbated by sleeping on your side and while bending over.

This is unlikely from a Cardiac cause.

OTC Antacids like Pirlosec, taken twice a day 1/2 hour before meals should help with this pain.

Avoid bending over and sleep in a slightly propped up position.

If this still persists, please see a doctor for an evaluation and possibly a Barium Swallow X rayto look for a Hiatus Hernia.

Kind Regards,

Dr.Joshi
