Question

I have anemia brought on by the antibodies attacking the hemoglobin and destroying it faster than I can make it. I've had 2 transfusions as well as having been treated with Cytoxin and Rituxan with only a temporary improvement in my hemoglobin count. It's going back down. It was at 9.4 yesterday after being up to 10.2 for the one week after Rituxan. What can be next?

Hi and thank you for your question. I am sorry you are going through this. If you have an inherited form of hemolytic anemia, it's a lifelong condition that may require ongoing treatment. If you have an acquired form of hemolytic anemia, it may go away once its cause can be found and corrected. As you know, blood transfusions are used to treat severe hemolytic anemia. These may have to be done fairly often. Medicines can improve some types of hemolytic anemia, especially autoimmune hemolytic anemia.Corticosteroid medicines, such as prednisone, are used to limit or prevent your immune system from making antibodies against red blood cells, which your Dr has done. Then next course of action is the one you are on now,Rituxan, which is a monoclonal antibody which specifically targets mature B Lymphocytes. This along with transfusions is the standard course of treatment. I hope this information helps you, if so, please click accept. I wish you the best:-)
