Answer

Hi and thank you for your question. Snoring occurs when there is some blockage in the air passage during sleep. It is the narrowing of our airway from a poor sleep posture or from an abnormality of our throat soft tissues. A narrow airway will hinder our normal smooth breathing and creates the snore sound. In most cases snoring is produced when we inhale, others can be produced when we are exhaling the air. As a result, there will be a two different frequency of snore sound we hear, one through inhaling air and the other though exhaling air. One is no more concerning than the other,
The soft tissue in our upper palate or throat starts vibrating during out sleep. When you are younger, you will have a stronger muscle tone to control your throat muscle, but as you age your throat tissues will get much more lax during your sleep. Conditions that may be related to snoring include being overweight, having history of stroke, smoking, alcohol intake, various sedating medications, having large tonsils or tongue, and having an abnormal jaw or nasal anatomy. Many people find that sleeping on their side decreases snoring.I hope this information helps you:-)

Is there any medication or mechanical devices I can use to stop the vibration of the tissue on my upper throat?

Accepted Answer

yes, you could try using the nose strips that help keep nasal passages open, or you could ask your Dr for a sleep study whereby if apnea is noted, a cpap machine may be indicated, and if so, in addition to preventing sleep apnea, it also stops snoring.
