Question

Hi I have just installed a cream "Pro Marble" fireplace bought from B&Q and managed to get some fire cement stains on it. After trying various methods to remove the stains, I ended up doing a fine wet sandpaper rub, which did bring out the stains, however it also took the sheen off the surface and you can now clearly see the mat patches. How can I get the sheen back on please? the sandpaper has rubbed off the shine/polish and has left the lighter coloured mat surface. Many thanks

Answer

Hi XXXXXXXX

The only way to bring the the shine back is with a buffing wheel and rouge. You will need to go to a stone supply outlet for these supplies.

Thanks Rick

Would using the buffing wheel have any effect on the existing sheen as there are patches of bare marble and I would need to buff over some of the existing sheen.

Is this a simple process and could I do it.

Could you explain please roughly what is a rouge?

Many thanks

Steve

There will probably be a difference in the sheen between the factory polished surfaces and the spots the you polish. This is unavoidable. There is no way you can duplicate the factory finish but the bad spots will at least be passable. It is a pretty simple process. You just put the buffing wheel to the surface you want polished, and work it back and forth until you get the desired finish. You could do it yourself if you have the proper equipment. Try a tile or stone products outlet for the tools. They can be a bit pricey. Rouge is buffing compound usually in the form of a stick a bit smaller than a stick of butter. You run the buffing wheel against the rouge so the wheel can pick up the compound then the wheel is put to the surface to be polished.
