I have the OS recovery cd but this warns that I will lose all my data and have toreinstall all drivers!

Strangely, although I have the power cord connected my battery warning led has just

lit. I wonder whether it could be sometrhing related to an erroneous power save?

It can be, but it should at least start in safe mode. Try to reset the hardware using the following steps:

1 Disconnect the battery and the charger
2 Let it sit for 1-2 minutes.
3 Press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds.
4 Connect the charger (don't connect the battery yet) and try to start by pressing the power button.

Let me know if everything remain same

when you say disconnect the battery, you mean the internal one requiring a screwdriver?

Posted by Santonu 29 days and 17 hours ago.

Info Request

Not the internal one.
Can you disconnect the backup battery from the laptop. I think you need to slide a lock to release the battery.

Tried once with no success about to try again after a longer wait

I assume holding down th ebutton fro 30secs drains all residual charge?

Posted by Santonu 29 days and 17 hours ago.

Info Request

Yes and after that try to start with only the charger connected.

If the system fails to start that it can be due to some corrupted system files.

I was afraid you would say that. It happened on my desktop and I had to reinstall from scratch and it took a week to recover

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately the indications are not good.

With a Windws XP disc, there is an option to repair the error by runing a repair install of Windows. Which preseves the data and replaces any corrupted system files with the correct ones.

But with a recovery disc, the system will be restored to factory defaults, deleting your data.

Another option is to take out the hard drive from the system and connect it to a hard drive enclosure like the following:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PKC102

Then connect it to a working computer and take a backup of the data.

Done that, connect the hard drive back to the laptop and then run the recovery discs.
