Question

Good day. I have a 2004 Freelander TD4, only done 84000km, that is causing me trouble. Hard starting and turbo-lag was sorted by dealer by de-carbonising the heads, having the injectors remanufactured and reprograming the computer. This was done 300km ago after which Landy was going very well, but now engine is very rough, seems to be running on 3 cylinders. Tried removing injector wires, but only gets worse. Is it possible that injection timing can be out? Dealer is 300km away, so taking it back is a problem. Scared to drive with it spitting and sputtering. Any thing that I can check by myself? No warning lights on dash. Thanks, Neil in Thabazimbi, South Africa

Answer

I suspect that one of the injectors is the problem. When you disconnected the wires, you probably noticed that it got worse. You should be able to pinpoint it down to one cylinder. I suspect you will have to have the dealer look at it again though. You should call them, and see if they will help with the tow bill.

Hi Jagmaster. Thanks. i tried disconecting injector wires while idling. Just got worse. Could not pinpoint fault to one injector. That is what is confusing me! Starting still fine though. Taken it to a Bosch Certified Auto Electrician this morning. I pray his computer will pickup the fault and that it is not going to cost too much to have fixed. I will keep you informed when I get feedback from auto electrician.

Injectors have been removed and sent to Cluas, who remanufactured them, for testing. Seems that injector jets are too big, causing diesel not to atomise properly, or high pressure pump not delivering enough pressure at idle. Errors recorded on EDC relates to injectors only. No error on high pressure pump. At what pressure must the high pressure pump deliver diesel to the common rail? Will only be able to test pump once injectors are returned.

Accepted Answer

At idle, it should be somewhere around 300 BAR. It's a lot of pressure. I hope that helps.
