Question

How many days of sleepless nights and worry will my hubby and I have to endure before we'll know that our 5 1/2 month old Staghound/Mastiff mixed female, who accidentally got hold of one of our grilled chicken drumsticks and ate it in two bites, is going to be okay?

Answer

Hi,

Cooked bones splinter more easily than raw, so you'll need to watch for any decrease in appetite, symptoms of stomach pain, blood in the stool, constipation or diarrhea, vomiting (with or without blood) , difficulty breathing and lethargy or any unusual behavior in your furry girl. The chicken and bones should pass within 1-3 days.

If she's acting fine now, that's good, and if you'd like to find out definitely if she has caused any intestinal damage with this ingestion, it would be a good idea to have her evaluated by a vet, as soon as possible. An x-ray will show where the bones are located in her digestive system, and a fecal analysis will show if there is any occult blood in her stool at this time.

I hope all will be well with your puppy.
