Question

Hi! Our new kitten "Poncho" has third red eyelids. He is about 5 months old and it has gotten worse. The other kitten "Angel" adopted from the same place, seems to have an eye problem as well. One eye waters all the time and he closes it regularly, but no third eyelid. I am wondering what is up with that. Both adopted Labor Day 2009 from the same place, but not same litter. Our vet was severly injured (fingers) and I am not so sure she is up to par! We have taken them both in and she doesn't think much about it, but we have salve - Gentak - new as of today - ran out of the other. Of course, the kittens hate it. Any suggestions? Angel was on atibiotics for a 10 day period and he was better for a while, but started looking bad again. Our vet did not prescribe new antibotics for Angel today. I am getting confused and want to nip this with both kitties in the bud. I would also like suggestions on how to put the salve in their eyes, as I see this is going to be ongoing. Thanks!

Optional Information

Pet's Gender: Male
Pet's Age: <1
Type of Animal: 2 kittens

Already Tried:
Gentak - new today for Angel, prescribed by Dr. Kim (our vet - we have 2 other cats over 6-7 yrs old - dog recently died); Vetropolycin prescribed by adoption agency vet (given to both kittens, but originally presribed for Poncho by adoption vet, and OK'd by Dr. Kim to give to Angel) and Clavamox Drops 15 ml (antibiotic) presribed by Dr. Kim for Angel. We are also giving them Vetri-Lyxine Plus Soft Chews (1 per day). Angel road around in the engine compartment of a car for 1,400 miles before being found so he may have some issues. But is friendly and gets along with all other cats.

This is very likely due to upper respiratory viral infection picked up before you got them.

You can read about these here

http://marvistavet.com/html/feline_upper_respiratory.html

Viral infections are not cleared up by antibiotics but secondary bacterial infections can be cleared with them.

How kittens react to the viruses depends on their own immune systems so each could react differently.

This site has some good pictures on giving eye meds to cats

http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/ClientED/cat_eyes.aspx

A really uncooperative kitten can be confined in a big bath towel so you don't have to try to handle feet when trying to do this if you need to do it by yourself.

Hope this helps you!

Yes, this was very helpful, especially the giving eye-med part. I am unclear as to why Angel (the one with only one eye problem) and antibiotics did help him, until they were gone. And what to do about this "cherry eye" thing in the other. Reading about this online is there anything that can be done or will he outgrow it? I will up to $30 since I am asking about 2 different pets/issues.

If the tear duct in the eye corner has popped out and its not just the third eyelid that is inflamed then surgical repair of 'cherry eye' is the best choice.

http://marvistavet.com/html/cherry_eye.html has some info on the reasons for surgical repair though it talks mostly about dogs it has a picture of the eye issue.

And here is more on cherry eye in cats (just close the pop up to read the info)

http://www.petplace.com/cats/cherry-eye-in-cats/page1.aspx

I suspect with Angel you were dealing with a better developed immune system which was able to fight off the virus.

You said he went through a lot of stress and stress can make infections worse, but as he came through the trauma and is still a nice kitten that tells you he handles stress better than many cats which might contribute to his ability to fight off infection.

You didn't mention if the kittens were tested for viral infections such as feline leukemia as harboring that sort of infection can lead to trouble with clearing other infections.

http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+1316&aid=213 has info on FIV

and this site on feline leukemia

http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/brochures/felv.html

And also if they are not totally clear if internal parasites that can impact recovery time as the parasites 'steal' nutritoin from the kitten. They sometimes need 2-3 wormings to totally clear an infection.

Nancy ~ Thank you so much. I have learned alot. Angel and Poncho have both been vaccinated for rabies and tested for everything and are healthy. Dewormed twice just to be safe (took poop myself, although husbund said he would do it.) So we'll just get through this eye part with them. I raised a bottle baby kitten and "all" I had to do with him is teach him how to poop, so this eye thing is new for me! It is so nice to be able to get answers when you are feeling concerned.

Best regards and thanks for being there!

You are very welcome - glad to hear all the testing was done!

I hope they are both feeling better soon.
