Question

I am living overseas with my husband in Australia. I am American and did not think that I needed to file my taxes from the US when I was filing them here. I filed my US taxes in 2006 (for 2005) when I first moved here as I had some US income, but have not had any income or any assets in the US since then. I am told I am required to file even if I don't have any income and want to know the easiest way to file for 2006, 2007 and 2008. I am moving back to the US with my family in December and need to get this done for my husband's visa to go through. I need assistance as soon as possible. Your help would be appreciated! Thanks, XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX

Dear Jennifer,

As a US citizen you should report all your worldwide income.

However - whether you must file a federal income tax return depends on your gross income, your filing status, your age, and whether you are a dependent.

The filing requirements apply even if you owe no tax.
