Optional Information

Year: 1988
Make: BMW
Model: 750iL
Engine: 5.0 litre V12

Already Tried:
Nothing yet just bought it a week ago and there is about 5-6 inches of play in the steering wheel

Answer

Hi, there is no real adjustment to tighten on these.
It's likely that the steering components are worn out. The tie rods, and center link likel have alot of play.
If those are ok, the steering box may be worn out.

new tie rods new center link, all new bushings and rebuilt steering box, according to a fellow Bimmer head there id a nut on the steering column itself that works loose, just wanted to know how to access this

Answer

Hi, there is a nut on the lower steering column, but I don't think this being loose will cause 5-6" of play. That is a large amount.
This nut is there to keep friction between the sliding section of the lower column. Adusting this will change how much force is required for the column to collapse in an accident.
See picture, the nut is #1.

It could be the rubber joint in the upper column.
See # 2 in the picture.

That's the part!! How do I access it?

Posted by bimmaster 146 days and 17 hours ago.

Answer

You just have to remove the trim above the pedals to see it.
Should be a few phillips screws.
The nut should be 32mm, I know its that size on the 3 series of that time.

thanks for the help! do you also have the list of parts those diagrams referred to? I had a shop do my suspension work and the guy only gave me a bill stating 'I kid you not' "replace steering and related components" I would like the list of part #'s as my friend wants to buyan E32 also and the name of the parts you had in the diagrams would be great!

The pictures are from a great site called realoem.com
You can go there, input the last 7 of your vin and look up all the parts for the vehicle with diagrams.
Here is the link to the whole parts list and picture.
