Hello my name is Matt and I will be more than happy to assist you.

With the car fully warmed up do the heater core hoses feel hot?

29 days and 23 hours ago.

Reply

ver hot no, hot yes. If I disconnect the hose hot water will travel through the core, If you feel the core it is only warm on the bottom and the heat is not traveling up the core. The water in the system is hot an the cooling fan comes on as expected.

Answer

If it is hot in one hose and warm at the other then your problem is not in the cooling system.

Your problem with be with the Heater Blend Door, Heater Control Head, or a vacuum leak.

blend dor is correct, if yu put your hand on the heater core it is not hot. I raced the motor, like 4000 rpms and it started to warm up, when you return to idle or low rpm it cools right down.

Vacuum is also working, transfers air to heater, defrost, etc.

Does the temp gauge go up to normal or is it lower than normal?

29 days and 22 hours ago.

Reply

Does not have a temp gauge, however, it is coming up to full temp. If you losen the cap, it will boil out a little, which every car I have every had did.

Do you have a print of the heating system, hoses, etc, that shows where they go? If you can send it, I will accept that as my answer, maybe the heater core hoses are backwards or something. This is a used wnter beater, not my normal car. I am not sure what the first owner might have done.

I wish I did but the vehicle is to old for GM's online guides, and my two other programs are not helping either. But the part list does list off a Heater Control Valve. I'm unsure if your vehicle has one or not.

From the heater core follow the hoses to the engine. at any point is there a plasic valve connected to one of the lines before they connect to the engine?

I don't think so, the hose starts off with a niple just above the water pump, goes into the heater core, the hose that come out of the core goes around the back of the motor (metal pipe) and goes back in into the intake manifold just above the themostat. No valves.

Was the heat your main problem or did this start after a repair you did?

The car had no heat when I got it, it runs great, did not cost me anything for the car

Remove the hose from the heater core that goes to the top of the engine (not to the water pump) put the hose into a gallon container. start the vehicle and see how long it take to fill the container up.

How long did it take?

It starts to flow and the stops, wait a few seconds and flows again, then stops, and then seems to stop it would not be enough to fill a gallon. I did that when flushed the system.

Answer

The either you are low on coolant in the engine or there is a blockage in side the engine.

How many gallons would it take to fill the system? I was thinking it as the radiator where the water could not flow through fast enough to supply the water pup side. If you have the capacity it would help and we will call it a day.

Accepted Answer

Spec is 12.7 Quarts or just a little over 3 gallons.

Thanks Matt, I will drain it tomorrow. I don't think it will take three gallons. I am leaning toward the raditor. The fluid that was in there was nasty and it looks pretty bad for what I can see inside.

I am going to accept the answer, we gave it hell, and tomorrow is another day. Pleas send me an email if you think of anthing else I might try tomorrow.
