Question

73 olds 350 holly 4160, mechanical fuel pump, factory engine. Had problem blowing modules, put in new distributor car runs. Now, when idling and reving by hand, runs fine. Go up the road, shift hard through the gears, then it falls on its face and will not stay running. It will start for about 5 sec. and then die out. Fuel filter is not flowing full at this point......could it be the pump? I have no gas smell in my oil....

Answer

Hello XXXXXXX, my name is XXXXX. XXXXX you for choosing justanswer.com. Chances are the pump has failed. Remember to blow compressed air back thru thr fuel pump feed line to ensure the sock filter in the tank is clear. If you have any more questions or need any diagrams, please dont hesisitate to ask...Thanks again, JHoop

was not aware there was a filter in the tank, do I need to disconnect any of the other lines or just undo the feed line and blow through? (pump has 3 fittings) also note that the pump is only a couple weeks old, that doesnt always mean it is good, I understand.

Accepted Answer

The larger line that hooks to the pump is the feed line. Remove the gas cap before doing this. No other lines are involved in this. After clearing the sock in the tank, make sure there is always a good filter between the tank and carb. If you have any more questions or need any diagrams, please dont hesisitate to ask...Thanks again, JHoop
