Question

hi, I am currently traveling with my puppy (6 mos maltipoo) from PA to my parents' home in CA. I landed yesterday, and my dog pooped with no problem. My puppy usually eats Puppy 33 Royal Canine, but for the last day she has been eating Cesar Milan Puppy Food (that you can buy individually packaged at the grocery store)along with table scraps. Problem: that since last night, she has not pooped. I have spent SO MUCH time exercising her, but to no avail. Is it because she is in a strange place? She pooped yesterday, though, which makes me wonder whether something is wrong. I have been giving her lots of water (since it is 85 degrees here compared to the 50 degree weather in PA), and just recently gave her milk to possible "loosen" things up. I know pumpkin pulp is supposed to work, but my puppy will NOT eat it (ive tried in the past). Should I be worried? She usually poops 3 times a day. What can I give her besides the remedies already mentioned? Please experienced/ certified vets ONLY.

Answer

Thanks for the question XXXXXXXXX.

While I cannot diagnose this over the internet I can tell you the following :

1. As long as your pup is otherwise bright, alert, healthy and eating then you would have no immediate cause for concern in this situation. It could be due to a change in diet or a change in environment I have know this happen.

2. However if your dog is constipated you may want to try oral remedies such mineral oil which is an over the counter product available from your chemist or pharmacy to relieve your dog's constipation, this type of product is very gentle and safe. The dose rate for a dog like your would be around 2 ml twice a day orally. You can pick up a small syringe at the chemist which would make it easy to give the mineral oil.

3. But be aware that there would be two kinds of constipation in the dog, the first would be a simple or primary constipation which happens now and again and is not related to any disease process and may be related to feeding, it should respond to the above treatment.

But dogs can appear to be constipated on a secondary basis for other reasons such as bowel obstruction. This of course this is rare and you would usually see other very obvious signs related to this situation. But for this reason if the problem persists or other symptoms appear you should consider having a vet take a look as further tests may be needed.

If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.

is there any thing else besides mineral oil to give? Such as dairy products? Or something that I can get at the grocery store? I understand it is a change in diet, but she had no problem pooping yesterday! Should I even feed her tonight? What are the symptoms of bowel obstruction?

Accepted Answer

Hello again,

1. The symptoms of bowel obstruction would include, vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain and inappetance.

2. Provided she is otherwise bright and alert and healthy I would feed her tonight.

3. Regular canned dog food with no mixer plus lots of milk might help things along.

Regards,

Scott
