Question

I have lost my taste buds and my smell. Food has to be highly seasoned for me to taste a little and the smell has to be very potent in order for me to smell. I had a non malignant tumor removed three years ago, it was the size of a plum in the back of my head. The operation was a success but it left me with this problem. I have been to an ear nose and throat specialist they took a cat scan and found no obstruction. Could this be a side effect from the operation and will I ever receive my smell and taste back

HI and thank you for your question. I am sorry you are experiencing this problem. Loss of smell (anosmia) almost always guarantees a lost of taste along with it. As may occur with surgery, sensory neural damages of the olfactory neurons tend to be permanent and irreversible, but for some patients, the use of neurofeedback is providing some restoration of smell. As a non-invasive procedure, using very low levels of electromagnetic activity, the individual who suffers from anosmia may find improvement in as few as 20 sessions. You could ask your doctor about the use of neurofeedback in your particular case. I hope this information helps you. I wish you the best:-)
