Question

I have a Jack Russel, she is only 7 months old, she is having a problem with her paws. I didnt notice it until after I gave her the revolution flea treatment. I've been feeding her same dog food for some time. Benefil not sure if I am spelling that correctly puppy food, now she eats along with our 3 year old jack russel same food only not puppy brand. Her paws are raw she's loosing hair around her paws and her nails at the top are blood red. I took her to the vet she thought it was alergies but did not tell me how to treat it. She said it may b our lawn, we do not treat our lawn we live on 2 1/2 acres in the country is well kept but nothing is sprayed on the lawn and our other dog does not have a problem. I've never had a dog go thru this. Im really worried.

NO she didnt do anything I had taken her in because she developed a knot where she got her first rabies shot, and at the same time I showed her the paws she said its just an alergy and that the knot would go down and it did after about four five days, was just a reaction. The only thing I can think is that she was alergic to the revolution med I placed on the back of her neck. She eats the same food and there is nothing on the lawn no chemicals to harm her. But, she does lick her paws but not very often she more or less ignors them most of the time unless she is doing it while she is in the crate at night where she sleeps. I gave her some alergy medicine over the counter benedril just a quarter of a small pill, and it seems her paws are a lighter pink now. But they are still sore and her hair fell out over the paws some other then that she doesnt touch them. Im just worried can it be she cant be on the grass I've never had a dog do this befor, she seems very happy outside and very active.

Thanks for the additional information. This is not a typical reaction to the revolution, as the hair loss would be typically localized in the areas of application. Your vet could be correct, and this might be an allergy. Most commonly it is a contact allergy to the grass )(some dogs are just allergic to it, there does not need to be any chemicals on it). Buying some baby wipes and wiping her paws down each time she comes in may solve the issue if she is allergic to grass. I am concerned about something more serious though. Hairloss, redness and itching of the feet can sometimes be symptoms of a demodex infestation. Demodex is a mange mite that some dogs have trouble with. It is notoriously difficult to diagnose because the mange mites can be very hard to find. It will be necessary to have a vet perform a skin scraping of the feet, and some hairs should be plucked out as well, since the mite likes to live in the hair shaft. This mite can only be treated with medicines from a vet, and must be undertaken under strict veterinary supervision. Please see the following website for more informaton on demodex.

Your pup needs to go back to the vet, you may want to see a different vet if you are not comfortable with the one you saw last time. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. If this has been helpful, please hit the green accept button. Best of luck with your puppy :)
