Question

Hello there,I have a 5 year old Dachshund who is as healthy as a horse, but for the last 3 days he has been rubbing his jaw on everything.I inspected him carefully and he has nothing there.I gave him Benadryl just in case he got bit by an ant or bee.and I washed him also.He has been doing ever since my wife went out of town.Could it be dpression or nerves? Thanks for any help Scott

Answer

Dear Scott,

Thank you for your post. I am sorry to hear that your dog is having problems.

Based on the information you've provided, one of the first things that comes to mind is the potential for low blood calcium. Facial scratching is a very common clinical sign, along with weakness, lethargy and if it worsens, severe muscle twitching and seizures. Dachshunds are a breed that is commonly affected by this disorder called primary hypoparathyroidism (although it is rare).

To be safe, I would have him evaluated by your family veterinarian and have his blood work checked.

If the facial rubbing progresses to weakness, disorientation, muscle tremors or seizures, he should be taken to your local emergency clinic for care right away.

I am sorry that I can't give you an easy at home answer, and since I haven't seen your dog, I could be wrong, but I would urge you to err on the side of caution.

Please let me know how I can be of further assistance.

Thank you, I will accept your answer, but I just want you to know he Is only rubbing under his jaw and not even scratching with his paws and he is full of energy. But If he Is not better by tomorrow I will take him to the vet.Or If he gets worse I will take him to the emergecy vet.

Thanks for the additional information Scott. I am glad to hear that he is full of energy and seems otherwise okay. As you can see, nothing can replace a physical exam. I would still recommend keeping a close eye on him for any changes. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
