Test & Fix:

Check for intake air leaks at the crankcase vent valve cover on the rear of the intake manifold plenum and from leaking valve cover gaskets, usually at the rear of the cylinder head. Check the crankcase vent valve for correct installation of the vacuum plug. Check the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator. If either is loose or missing, replace the vent valve and plug. If they are not missing, check for intake leaks at the gasket between the valve and the intake plenum. In addition to the above problems, on vehicles with M60 engines, there is a possibility of uneven running due to one or more engine mechanical factors: incorrect piston ring end gaps and/or excessive cylinder wall wear. If intake leaks are not found, and normal tuning items such as spark plugs and coils are in good condition, compression and cylinder leakage tests should be performed to determine if an engine teardown is in order. NOTE: BMW has been extending the warranties on M60 engines beyond the normal warranty period. In some cases up to 100,000 miles. If the signs point to excessive engine wear, it might be advisable to contact a BMW dealer for warranty eligibility. A related document, BMW TSB 11 05 98, is available.
