Question
Looking to start a new business. In the state of New Jersey... Do you need to collect sales tax on On Site Computer Support? Not hardware replacement, just virus removal, spyware removal, "speed up computers", etc. Conflicting answers from State of NJ. I know if you put a part in the computer there is a tangable product being exchanged... but how about this? Does it make a difference if we will provide off site (remote) support?

Hello Smokey,
The services that you are providing fall under the category of computer maintenance and repair, and these are taxable services in the state of NJ, regardless of whether or not they are performed on site or from a remote location.
Please refer to the following NJ Sales Tax Guide which gives detailed information on the products and services that are either taxable or exempt from tax in the state. The category of computer maintenance and repairs is listed as taxable on page 17 of this guide.
