Question
A stray cat adopted us this past weekend. We've been seeing her all summer, but she finally allowed us to touch her, feed her, hold her, etc this past weekend. I became concerned about her today (Thursay - almost a week after she came to us). Her stomach feels swollen, she is sleeping all day, and sometimes cries when my 5 yr old picks her up. She is eating ok, and when she is outside she seems fine. Once in the house, she prefers to be let alone and has slept almost all day.

I am sorry to hear about the kitty not doing well. Here are some of my thoughts...
In regards to you indicating that she looks swollen in the stomach area - possible causes may include:
- Pregnancy
- Fluid (effusion) inside the abdominal cavity
- Organ enlargement of the spleen or liver (or other organs)
- Worms in the stomach
This would be a case where seeing a veterinarian would be recommended to determine the cause for the swelling - thus dictating treatment.
- Tests to consider:
--Bloodwork to check cell counts, organ values, blood sugar, electrolytes, thryoid
--Abdominal x-rays to see if the cause for the enlargement can be found
--Abdominal ultrasound may even be recommneded to get a sense of the detail of abnormal organs.
Certainly if there is fluid, we can get a sample of the fluid for analysis...
I hope you find this information useful.
