Question

My Guinea pig a female is 3 1/2 & has had what seems to be an infection which we first thought was urine as she was very wet around her rear end & underneath, the vet put her on anitbiotics & a fibre suringe, it didn't seem to clear up so they gave her different antibitotics which did seem to help. But she is again showing the signs of having something back, her wee is quite smelly & she is poo-ing a lot it is not runny but she is constantly going!! I don't like keep going to the vets as they seem to be unsure & also are expensive. She is otherwise ok & eating well. Any ideas?? My email add is XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX Thank you.

Info Request

Hello,

Some additional information will help me to answer your question.

Did the vet take any x-rays or do blood work?

Was the vet a guinea pig/rabbit specialist?

Do you know the names of the antibiotics that were used? How long was your guinea pig on each of them?

Are you pretty sure the wetness is from urine?

Thank you.

Hi Anna

Thank you for your reply, no the vet didn't do any blood tests or x-rays, he wasn't very nice & didn't re-assure us at all. I'm sorry i don't know what antibiotics he gave he injected her & then we had to give her 0.5mls of something for 10 days + a fibre substance. This didn't seem to help her so took her back & he gave her another injection & a different antibiotics which I think began with T. Her rear end seems abit swollen although she is poo-ing alot, she has been off the medication now for over a week & there has been some improvement & today she does seem alot better, in fact she is dry & almost normal it maybe getting in touch with you that has made this happen!! But I would still welcome any thoughts you may have. She is eating normally.

Thank you.

Audrey

Thank you for getting back to me, Audrey. I'm glad to hear your guinea pig is doing better. If the wetness was from urine, a urinary tract infection would be the most likely cause. The proper antibiotics would clear that up. Bladder stones or kidney disease can also cause urinary leakage. If it continues, or gets worse again, you would need x-rays and blood work to diagnose either of those conditions.

If the wetness was from the vagina, a reproductive problem would be to blame. Uterine infection, tumors, or ovarian cysts would all be possibilities. Again, further testing would be needed to diagnose these.

The fiber supplement is probably the reason your guinea pig is pooing so much. However, the swelling is a concern. If it's anal swelling, that can indicate that she's straining too much when she goes. If it's the vulva, that again can mean there is a reproductive system problem.

Since she is doing better, at this point, I would keep an eye on the situation. If anything changes for the worse, you will need to see a vet again. However, since you weren't happy with the one you saw, it would be a good idea to find a new one. This site has a directory of guinea pig/rabbit vets:

http://www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html

Guinea pigs are very prone to urinary tract infections because they're so low to the ground. You can help prevent future ones by making sure her cage is always dry, and by using a non-irritating paper-based bedding, such as CareFresh. To avoid digestive problems, be sure she has all of the high-quality timothy hay she wants.

Hi again Anna

Thank you so much for your advice, she does seem alot better the wetting has improved alot, I was reluctant to take her back to the vets as I didn't want him to say she had to be put down. My other guinea had a similar problem a while ago but with antibiotics got better very quickly & she had blood in her urine which was a real worry. But she is fighting fit now!!! I will monitor her progress & see how she is.

Thank you once again for your kind advice.

Kind regards

HiAnna

I Just want to thank you for your kind words about me & Snuggles. She does seem a lot better, I have een doing quite abit of research & am quite an expert now on Guineas', I noticed a while ago that her 'teets' were quite prominent & was wondering with her swollen vulva (which has gone down) was something to do with being 'on heat' or is she too old for that?? She does seem to get quite 'broody' sometimes!!! Do they suffer from 'phantom pregnancies' like Rabbits do??

Thank you again for your help & I won't hesitate to get in touch if I need to the amount of money I have spent at the Vets is very annoying compared to your advice.

Take care & kind regards

Answer

Hi again, audrey. Yes, guinea pigs can have false pregnancies like rabbits do. The symptoms you're seeing would have nothing to do with her heat cycles. she's not too old, but these are just not things that accompany the heat cycle.

A false pregnancy, some other type of hormone imbalance, and tumors or cysts in the reproductive sytem could cause the signs you're seeing. Her other symptoms could be related.

Hi Anna

Thank you for your kind email, we have had to take snuggles back to the vet & they have now done a hysterectomy which was yesterday they did a scan which didn't show up any stones so they thought it maybe a tumour etc so operated & found she had an infection in her womb/uterus so hence taking it all away. We have just been to see her & she is still quite dozy from the medication but at least she has survived & is eating a little we are hoping if she is well enough to maybe bring her home tomorrow which would be great as we really thought the worse!!!

Thank you once again for all your advice & won't hesitate to get in touch again if I need too.

Kind regards
