Hello, what I've most commonly seen causing this problem on these cars is the wiring for the o/d off switch on the shifter being broken near the base of the shifter, or the switch itself being faulty. You'll want to remove the center console and verify that the wiring isn't broken, and that the switch is functioning properly.

When i push the switch the light on the dash goes on and off correctly. Do you still think its the switch. Also it seems to take higher rpm's for it to shift into reg gears.

Yes, I would still check that first, the way the switch works is, power comes in one side, when it's in the off position power is switched to the lamp circuit, when it's in the on position the power is switched to the od enable circuit that runs to the tcm. So, if the wire to the tcm is broken it won't affect the operation of the light on the dash. I had this same issue on my accent, in my case I bypassed the o/d off switch since it was more of an annoyance than a feature for me. I've included the diagram for the o/d switch below.
