Question

There is a possibility that my 7 year old pitbull got into some Synthroid a thryroid medication used by my 84 year old stepmother when she was visiting. I found a pill on the floor which I threw away not thinking (at the time my dog was fine). A day later the dog was very lethargic, with slight tremors now and then with gurgling sounds in his stomach. I gave him yogurt and gatorade and his condition improved. Today he will not jump off the bed and I noticed he has tremors. Please help me as I lost my job and can not afford to take him to the vet. He is eating and drinking and going to the bathroom. I see no diarhea.

Answer

Hi, thanks for your question. Typically, dogs who consume excess thryoid medication are at very low risk of issues -- most commonly, we see panting, shaking, irritability, excitability, and occasionally we might see vomiting or diarrhea. The lethargy is not what I would expect from a dog who got into thyroid medication. If he is eating and drinking, I'm not terribly concerned right now, but if he is not improving within 24 hours, then the thyroid medication was not likely the cause of this issue, and somehow, you will need to have him examined by a veterinarian.

One of my guests at the time was smoking marijuana. I was at work when these people were visiting. Could it be he ingested some. I found a very tiny bit on my kitchen floor after they left.

Accepted Answer

Marijuana would be more likely to result in the symptoms of depression and lethargy that you are describing. I would be more inclined to believe that, as a source for your dog's current issues. If that is the cause, time and supportive care should be adequate to get him through this.
